Inter Milan vs Sampdoria: The Battle for Safety Starts Here
Inter Milan and Sampdoria see disappointing campaign this season. Nerrazurri had a high hope to end Juventus’s domination by signing Antonio Conte earlier this season but they are now sloping to the third with eight points behind Lazio on the second. Sampdoria is even worse. They are now on the sixteenth in the standings battling to avoid relegation which is only one point away from them. No wonder that this fixture can be considered as the beginning for fighting for their own safety, Conte’s future on the home side and Il Samp’s fate in the top flight on the visitor side.
Inter Milan news
Inter made their return in football after the break in Coppa Italia semifinal last week. Sadly, Conte’s men were unable to keep themselves in a competition as they could only hold Napoli in 1-1 draw. Christian Eriksen gave his team an early lead by his set piece. Yet, Il Partenopei equalised by Dries Mertens’ strike.
Sampdoria’s preparation to return to the pitch is disrupted by the injury of their captain and main scorer, Fabio Quagliarella. This 37-year old former Udinese man who scored the winning goals in their last game before the break against Verona, will be ruled out due to his injury.
Missing players and probable lineups
Antonio Conte might still be deploying his favorite 3-5-2 formation with possible transition to 3-4-1-2 by giving a number 10 role to Christian Eriksen. Some key figures in the squad such as Marcelo Brozovic and Stefano Sensi have been reported to be injured during the training. Mathias Vecino and Roberto Gagliardini are the favorite to replace them.
Inter Milan: Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni ; Mathias Vecino, Roberto Gagliardini, Victor Moses, Ashley Young; Christian Eriksen; Lautaro Martinez, Romelu Lukaku.
Claudio Ranieri has been opted for 4-2-3-1, 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 formation. The absence of Quagliarella plus Alex Ferrari forces him to be in a difficulty. Manolo Gabbiadini is the only option left in the squad to be picked as the targetman. The arrival of Maya Yoshida from Southampton could be helpful to give additional support for their poor defense.
Sampdoria: Emil Audero; Maya Yoshida, Lorenzo Tonelli, Bartosz Berezynski, Nicola Murru ; Karol Linetty, Ronaldo Viera, Jakub Jankto, Fabio Depaoli; Gaston Ramirez; Manolo Gabbiadini.
In the head-to-head encounters, Inter is certainly more dominant. They have won five times in the last six outings against Il Samp. Meanwhile, the visitor’s side has only been able to win once.
The hope to win Serie A may fade away for Romelu Lukaku and Co. All is left to do is to win their remaining thirteen games to secure their Champions League spot while praying for Juventus stumbling on their way. This match should be the one they could seal the three points easily.
