Genoa vs Sassuolo: Match preview
Genoa will host Sassuolo in Round 18 of Serie A on Sunday. Genoa starts the new year with their third coach this season. Davide Nicola will be tasked with getting them out of the relegation zone they are currently in.
They are currently at the bottom of Serie A and without a win in their last eight games. They will have a tough battle if they want to stay in elite company.
Genoa team news:
President Enrico Preziosi fired Andreazzoli in October, then brought in Thiago Motta only to fire him just before Christmas. Since then, several names have been mentioned, including a potential fourth spell led by David Ballardini, before David Nicola got the job. He will have the support of fans as he has played for Genoa during his playing career.
He will now look to the January deadline to bring new players to the squad. Mattia Perin returned 18 months after transferring to Juventus, where he only managed to make nine appearances for the Serie A giants in a six-month loan. Mattia Destro also comes from Bologna, while Behrami has checked in as a free agent and has not played since October.
Genoa has a home record this season of two wins, a draw and five losses. At home they scored eight and received 11 goals this season. In their last three home games, they have lost to Udinese 1-3, then Torino and Sampdoria 0-1 each.
As for the absences, Christian Kouame and Lukas Lerager are still injured, but Goran Pandev returns from suspension to step up the attack after losing 4-0 to Inter last round.
Nicola is expected to start with a 3-5-2 formation, with Pandev and Andrea Pinamonti starting offensively. Stefano Sturaro and Christian Zapata are returning from injury and at least one will be in the first lineup.
Probable lineup: Radu; Ghiglione, Romero, Criscito, Pajac; Cassata, Schone, Sturaro; Pandev, Pinamonti, Agudelo
Sassuolo team news:
Sassuolo has been pretty consistent this season if we compare them to their opponent. However, they enter this match without a win in the last five matches. To make matters worse, they suffered their last defeat by Napoli as they entered the Christmas break.
Still, their situation is not as bad as it seems, as they have shown some positive moments. Against Lazio they lost in the referee’s compensation, followed by credible draws with Juventus, Cagliari and Milan.
Sassuolo recorded two wins, three draws and three losses before this match. They scored ten and received 11 goals in the away game. In the last three away games, they played draws with Juventus 2-2, Milan 0-0 and beat Brescia 0-2.
As for the absences, Domenico Berardi remains in doubt for this match after missing his last against Napoli, along with Marlon, Gregoire Defrel and Vlad Chirches, who remained off the field.
The good news is that players like Filip Djuricic, Hamed Junior Traore and Jeremie Boge should start in the first line-up. Francesco Magnanelli is fully ready and is starting in midfield. On goal, we can expect Andrea Consigli to start the match after being off the field since the end of November due to a muscle injury.
Probable lineup: Consigli; Toljan, Marlon, Romagna, Kyriakopoulos; Magnanelli, Locatelli; Berardi, Djuricic, Boga; Caputo.
It seems like a great match for cards and goals. These are the two teams that are at the top of the table when it comes to the cards this season. Almost three cards are averaged per game for Genoa and Sassuolo, while Genoa received the most red cards this season, as many as three straight and three over yellow cards.
