Cagliari vs Atalanta: Simeone Strikes Again!
Another Simeone is ready to raise the eyebrows soon. After Diego Simeone who once was the key man in Inter Milan and Lazio in Serie A in the 90s and early 2000s, his son is likely to follow his father’s footstep. Despite playing as a striker, which is a different position from his father, well-known defensive midfielder, Giovanni has also been the key figure in each of his teams so far from Genoa, Fiorentina and currently in Cagliari. Since the arrival of Walter Zenga to be in charge of the Sardinian team, he has scored one in each game after the restart. This weekend, the 25-year old forward is expected to strike again against Atalanta, the team with the biggest goal aggregate this season. His goal would hopefully help Cagliari bump up to a better position.
Walter Zenga’s men were only able to pick up one point while visiting Renato D’allara in Bologna. They had a tight 1-1 game. Musa Barrow gave the lead for the host before Giovanni Simeone equalised at the second half. He benefited from Radja Nainggolan’s pass and tucked in the ball at the back of the net.
Atalanta endured their positive trend and achieved their seventh consecutive win after dismantling Napoli at home in the midweek. Mario Pasalic opened the score sheet and Robin Gosens doubled their lead. They have secured one European spot for next season.
Missing players and probable lineups
The former Inter goalie, Walter Zenga tends to opt for 3-5-2 formation. Giovanni Simeone and Joao Pedro will be the main frontmen. Both have scored twenty seven goals and provided seven assists altogether. They will get support from the former Roma and Inter man, Radja Nainggolan. However, several players will be ruled out on the Sardinia’s side in this outing due to their injuries such as Fabio Pisacane, Leonardo Pavoletti, Paolo Farago and Gaston Perreiro, whereas Luca Pellegrini is serving his ban.
Cagliari: Robin Olsen; Andrea Carboni, Luca Ceppitelli, Sebastian Walukiewicz ; Marko Rog, Luca Cigarini, Nahitan Nandez; Radja Nainggolan, Charalampos Lykogiannis ; Giovanni Simeone , Joao Pedro
Gian Gasperini has always been deploying quite similar formation but more fluid and adaptable as it can transform to 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-1-2 when necessary. Alejandro Gomez is still the key man in their attack. He has been irreplaceable attacking midifielder. At the front, Gasperini does rotate his frontman more as he has similar quality in all his strikers, the Colombian duo, Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel plus the Slovenian international, Josip Illicic.
Atalanta: Pieluigi Gollini; Jose Palomino, Rafael Toloi, Berat Djimsiti; Robin Gosens, Timothy Castagne, Ruslan Malinovski, Remo Freuler ; Alejandro Gomez, Mario Pasalic; Luis Muriel.
The host is apparently more dominant in their head-to-head meetings. They have had four wins in the last six encounters, while Atalanta has only won twice. However, the visting side has been unbeaten in the last twelve games in all competition.
Papu Gomez and Co are still likely to be unstoppable here. They have all it takes to clinch their eighth win in a row with deadly strikers in line, creative playmaker in their captain, versatile and energetic midfielders plus their high confidence. Simeone will possibly bag another goal or two but eventually Cagliari will have to lose the game, probably in a one-goal difference only.
