Saint Etienne vs Lyon: Match Preview and Prediction

Lyon’s campaign this season seems to be rather disappointing. They are still far from expectation end PSG’s domination. Sylvinho’s men have not been able to have their constant form so far and only sit in the midtable. This weekend, they will be visiting St.Etienne, the Champions League runner-up in 1975/76 edition.

Saint Etienne news:

Saint Etienne manage to qualify to the Europa League group stage this season. Unfortunately, they only have one point and sit on the third of the table. Their domestic campaign is even worse. They are stuck in the relegation zone with only eight points in eight matches. Last week, Matheiu Debuchy and Co were able to secure their second three points against Nimes. Meanwhile, in the Europa League matchday two they held Wolfsburg in 1-1 draw last Thursday. Timothee Kolodziejzcak scored an opener before William equalised. However, they could hope for the better form in the next fixtures as Claude Puel arrived three days ago. This former Lyon’s and Leicester’s boss has been hired for three years to save the club from downfall.

Lyon news:

Olympique Lyon’s form under Sylvinho has been inconsistent. They have only won twice and got three draws in eight games. Last week, they slumped to another defeat when they were hosting Nantes. Fortunately, their campaign in Champions League has been slightly better. Anthony Lopes and Co snatched three points while visiting RB Leipzig this midweek. They defeated the host 2-0. Memphis Depay and Martin Terrier were the ones who bagged winning goals in German soil.

Missing players and probable lineups:

Claude Puel is believed to employ the same formation as his predecessor did, 4-2-3-1 with plausible transition to 4-3-3 or 4-5-1. He will be focusing on building more solid defence and improvement on the attacking side. Unfortunately, quite a number of players will be rested such as Sergi Palencia due to sprained ankle, Romain Hamouma (suspended), Lois Diony and Kevin Monnet-Paquet.

Saint Etienne: Jessy Moulin; Mathieu Debuchy, Timothee Kolodziejczak, Loic Perrin, Harold Moukoudi; Yann M’Vila, Jean Aholou, Yohann Cabaye; Denis Bouanga, Ryad Boudebouz ; Wahbi Khazri.

Sylvinho is normally opts to 4-3-3 formation but his success in adopting three-defender system in Champions league could give him a nod for flexible transition to 3-5-2. Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay will still be the main forward. Bernard Traore can be an alternative in the second half. Luckily, they only have one player in the injury table, the Belgian international, Jason Denayer. Another one will be sidelined is Youssouf Kone due to suspension.

Lyon: Anthony Lopes; Marcal, Joachim Andersen, Marcelo; Leo Dubois, Kenny Tete, Thiago Mendes, Houssam Aourar, Lucas Tousart; Memphis Depay, Moussa Dembele.

Match facts:

Lyon definitely have better record in their head-to-head meetings with four wins and a draw in their last six encounter. Yet, Sylvinho’s men have failed to secure three points in the past six games of Ligue 1.

Saint Etienne might have the advantage to play at their home turf, Stade Geoffroy Guichard, plus the arrival of an experienced manager, Claude Puel. He used to lead Lyon as well. Nevertheless, Les Gones is still the favourite to win considering their more deadly strikers, Memphis Depay and Moussa Dembele.
