Monaco’s form in Ligue 1 this season is still below their fans’ expectation so far. The return of Leonardo Jardim does not guarantee their revival yet. They are still stuck on the fourteenth of the table with eighteen points, which is only three points away from the relegation zone. This week, Wissam Ben Yedder and Co have to take on the leader of the standings, PSG. This clash is supposed to be one of the classic matches in France top tier despite their current position on the table.
Monaco seems to have consistency issues this season. With only five wins, three draws and six defeats so far, Leonardo Jardim is still in progress of searching the best formula to optimise the current squad’s potentials. Last week, for example, they lost 1-2 while visiting Bordeaux. Jardim’s men opened the score sheet by Islam Slimani’s goal. Yet, it was him too who led to their defeat. His handball at the second half cost him a lot. He was sent off and the host was given a penalty, which was successfully done by Nicolas De Preville after previously he provided an assist for Pablo’s header as an equalizer.
PSG’s positive trend seems quite unstoppable. The return of Kylian Mbappe, Edison Cavani and Mauro Icardi’s improving form lately does put Thomas Tuchel at ease. He has various options for the attacking side. No wonder that rotating his squad would be the best way to keep the team in their best performance each and every match. In the previous game, Tuchel’s men managed to hold Real Madrid in a 2-2 on matchday five of Champions League. They were on the verge of their first defeat in UCL before Mbappe’s and Pablo Sarabia’s strike denied Sergio Ramos and Co’s prospective win. Meanwhile, last week, they easily trashed Lille 2-0 by goals from Mauro Icardi and Angel Di Maria.
Missing players and probable lineups:
Leonardo Jardim tends to employ two-forward-based formation, either 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 this season. The latter one has been the main option for the past few games. He relies on the deadly duo forward, Islam Slimani and Wissam Ben Yedder to score. They both have bagged 15 goals so far. Unfortunately, Slimani, who used to be the former FC Porto and Leicester’s frontman will have to miss out the game due to his suspension. Thus, the 3-5-1-1 might be worth considering by playing Fabregas as the playmaker behind Ben Yedder.
Monaco: Benjamin Lecomte; Kamil Glik, Guillermo Maripan, Benoit Mukinayi ; Gil Dias, Adrien Silva, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Benjamin Heinrich, Gelson Martins; Cesc Fabregas, Wissam Ben Yedder,
Thomas Tuchel often opts for 4-3-3 for his competitive squad. No wonder that everyone has to strive for a spot in the line-up, including the superstar Neymar and German’s supposedly talented midfielder, Julian Draxler. For this upcoming fixture, some of the names are in the injury table such as Ander Herrera, Thilo Kehrer and Erik Choupo-Mouting.
PSG: Keylor Navas; Thomas Munier, Thiago Silva, Colin Dagba, Presnel Kimpembe; Marco Verratti, Carlos Paredes, Pablo Sarabia; Neymar, Mauro Icardi, Kylian Mbappe.
Statistically, PSG has much more convincing record than Monaco in their head-to-head meetings. They have had eight wins in their last 15 encounters. Thiago Silva and Co have always won with two goal difference or more in the last four games.
Playing at their home turf does not make Jardim’s men easier to win. Their inconsistent form, the absence of Islam Slimani might cost their opportunity to seal three points here. Tuchel’s men are definitely the favourite to win over the host.
