Nantes seems to have had a surprising nice start in Ligue 1 this season. They are currently sitting on the second of the table entailing Paris Saint Germain. They might not aim for winning the title yet. However, the chance is still open due to PSG’s occasional inconsistency this season. The latest one, they were shockingly defeated by Dijon. They are still twelve points away from the top of the standings. Thus, a victory is a must for their next fixture. This time, it will not be easy for them as they have to visit Stade Matmut Atlantique to meet Bordeaux, which sits on the mid table.
Bordeaux has had negative results in their last two games of Ligue 1. They were beaten by Saint Etienne and Lille without scoring a single goal. Luckily, Paulo Sousa’s men could win over Dijon in French League Cup this midweek to avoid more disappointment. It will be something the former Fiorentina boss has to do to improve their attacking side’s finishing touch because of their failure to score lately.
Nantes’s current position is still not safe if they are aiming for playing in the Champions League next season. Les Canaries are in need of sealing three points. Unfortunately, they have not been so much different from their contender. They lost consecutively 0-1 against Metz and Monaco in Ligue 1. Yet, they could easily progress to the next round in French Ligue Cup after crushing Paris FC eight goals to nil. This will be good for boosting their confidence.
Missing players and probable lineups:
Paulo Sousa is normally in favour of 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 depending on the opponents. The former one seems more suitable for taking on the typical 4-2-3-1 of Nantes. However, he will not be able to put his best line up as some key figures are ruled out such as Yacine Adli and possibly Pablo plus Youssouf Sabaly due to their injury.
Bordeaux: Benoit Costil; Vukasin Jovanovic, Laurent Koscielny, Mexer; Loris Benito, Enock Kwateng, Otavio, Youseef Bennasser; Nicolas de Preville, Samuel Kalu ; Jimmy Briand.
Meanwhile, Christian Gourcuff tends to employ 4-2-3-1 all this time. With barely any transition to any other formations, Kalifa Coulibally and Co will possibly be in difficulty again to pick up three points. Gourcuff has to modify their approach a bit for gaining more points in each match, including in this upcoming fixture, especially when they have some players in the injury table such as Dennis Appiah, Fabio, Rene Krhin and Charles Traore.
Nantes: Alban Lafont; Nicolas Pallois, Thomas Basila, Andrei Girotto, Samuel Moutoussammy; Abdoulaye Toure, Mehdi Albeid; Moses Simon, Imran Louza, Cristian Benavente ; Kalifa Coulibally
In their head-to-head encounter, Bordeaux is absolutely more superior with four wins and one draw in their last six meetings. They have been unbeaten in their last 7 games against Nantes.
Playing at home does not necessarily give advantage for Laurent Koscielny and Co to seal three points. Their forwards’ unconvincing form and the absence of Yacine Adli could affect their offence. Christian Gourcuff’s men are not so much different as well. A goalless draw seems to be fair for both.
