Saint-Étienne vs Wolfsburg: Match preview
For Saint-Étienne this is a bad season at least for now and they lost in the first round of the European League. In the championship they have only two triumphs. Wolfsburg started the European trip with a safe home victory and they are quite good in the Bundesliga, where they occupy the seventh place. St.Etienne is the penultimate in France, and so far these rivals have not met in European competitions.
Saint-Étienne team news:
St.Etienne plays poorly this season and feels that way in both competitions. They lost away to Gent in the first round with 3: 2 realistically they were not even close to a positive result. In the French championship only two wins in eight rounds played and it is interesting that they both achieved in away games. They started the championship with a triumph, as they won against Dijon 2: 1. This was followed by a negative series of six unbeaten duels and only two draws in that series.
In both draws they played in front of their fans, but against objectively weaker rivals, Brest and Toulouse. They lost against Lille and Angers, while the biggest surprise was that they lost to Metz in their stadium two rounds ago.
In the last round they finally triumphed again and for the first time this season they did not receive a goal. They celebrated at Nimes with a 1-0 goal from veteran Debuchy 20 minutes before the end, after which Hamouma was ruled out and they frantically defended the advantage. Surely Palencia and Ruffier will not play due to injury, and some other players are questionable.
Probable starting lineup: Moulin – Moukoudi, Perrin, Saliba – Debuchy, Youssouf, M’Vila, Trauco – Boudebouz – Hamouma, Khazri
Wolfsburg team news:
Wolfsburg may be much more satisfied, as this team won the first round of the European League. They welcomed Ukrainian Olexandria and routinely celebrated with 3: 1.
In the six championship rounds, Wolfsburg has never lost and when it comes to winning the Cup, then this is a total of eight matches this season in which with no bowed heads they left the field. However, they have three draws in the Championship , so they are not better placed than seventh, but the differences is very small and leader escapes them by only two points. They started with two victories, and then they played three draws three times and each time the result was 1: 1.
They have drawn twice in their home field and a particularly bad draw with Paderborn, while they could easily lose against Hoffenheim. In the last round, they came back with victories as they celebrated 1-0 at Mainz.
Tisserand was the scorer in the early stages of the match and they kept it until the end, although there are indeed plenty of injured players and as many as six are on the roster. They need refreshments and certainly coach Glasner will change the lineup. Mbabu, Gerhardt and Steffen are serious candidates for the show, and maybe Klaus is.
Probable starting lineup: Pervan – Knoche, Guilavogui, Tisserand – Mbabu, Arnold, Gerhardt, Steffen – Mehmedi, Brekalo – Weghorst
Wolfsburg can play more relaxed as they already have three points on the count, while St.Etienne is under pressure. The home side have been hard at scoring, and Wolfsburg has been playing few goals lately. This is the outcome we expect in this duel.
