Lazio vs Cluj: Match preview
Lazio will host Cluj in the fifth round of the Europa League group stage on Thursday. They will fight for the win and three points that could give them a chance to fight for the second position leading to the knockout phase. Lazio has no room for error here, as Cluj only needs a point to go further at the expense of their Italian hosts.
Lazio team news:
Lazio has no right to mistake, as we said before. Cluj is coming to Rome and they need a point to go into the knockout phase. We believe that Lazio will win that much-needed victory here. With three defeats in their first four Group E matches, Lazio can’t afford to lose more points if they hope to reach the knockout stage.
Cluj comes to Rome knowing that one point in the last two rounds can help them to qualify into the knockout phase. Lazio’s home form in the Europa League group stage is 15 wins, four draws and four losses. They were in a series of 17 games without defeat in Rome until losing to Frankfurt by 1-2 last season.
The Serie A team has lost three of their last four home games in the competition. They have failed to keep the net intact in the last ten games.
Probable lineup: Strakosha; Bastos, Vavro, Acerbi; Lazzari, Parolo, Cataldi, Luis Alberto, Jony; Caicedo, Immobile.
Cluj team news:
Cluj picked up their fifth Romanian league title – and the second consecutive in the 2018/19 season. All these triumphs have arrived since 2008.
In Europe, they lost to Malmö in the second qualifying round of the Champions League and reached no further than the Europa League playoffs. There they were defeated twice by 0-2 and 2-3 by Dudelange of Luxembourg.
A 1-0 defeat to Astana triggered this season’s Champions League campaign, but Cluj reversed that game and won 3-1 at home. Then they defeated Maccabi Tel-Aviv after being knocked out by Celtic.
Slavia Prague proved too strong for this team after winning both games 1-0 and sending Cluj to their second group stage of the Europa League. They first played in 2009/10, which ended with just one win and five defeats. They will miss Rondon, while Tucudean is in doubt.
Probable lineup: Arlauskis; Susic, Burca, Boli, Camora; Djokovic, Bordeianu, Culio; Deac, Traore, Omrani.
Lazio is a huge favorite this time and we are sure they will seek revenge in this match. With a new three points they will try to catch Cluj, who is in second place. Lazio is currently in a bad situation on the standings and this is a must-win match for them if they plan to stay in the knockout phase.
Lazio has only three points at the moment, which is six less than Cluj, and even seven less than Celtic. This means that this is their last chance to try to capture Cluj and get into the knockout phase. Because of this, we believe Lazio will start the attack from the first minute. That is we expect an open game on their part.
