Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen: Match Preview and Prediction

Dortmund’s target to end Bayern Munchen’s domination this season does not go well as expected. They have been stumbled a couple of times which leads them to be only on the third of the standings and still one point behind Die Roeten plus three points away from RB Leipzig, the top leader of the current Bundesliga table. They must not lose another point in the future, including in the next game against Werder Bremen in Signal Iduna Park. This should be an easy win for Marco Reus and Co because, unlike in mid 90s where they both were strong rivals in the domestic competition, Dortmund has much better team than their contender.

Dortmund news:

Dortmund’s campaign to take over the domestic throne seems to be tougher that they could imagine. Despite making a number of new signings such as Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt and Mats Hummels, they have not been able to consistently pick up three points in each game. Last week, they had to stumble again when they visited Eintracht Frankfurt. Lucien Favre’s men could take the lead twice but Frankfurt managed to equalise twice too. One of them was even an own goal from Thomas Delaney.

Werder Bremen news:

Werder Bremen have not been in their best form yet. In matchday 5 last week, they were trashed 0-3 by RB Leipzig at home.  The manager Florian Kohfeldt has attempted to employ several formation such 4-3-1-2, 3-4-2-1 or 4-1-3-2 so far but their result is still unsatisfactory. Their summer signings on loan such as the Swiss defender Michael Lang, Leonard Bittencourt and Omer Toprak have not shown their true class yet.

Missing players and probable lineups:

Favre’s current squad is considered better than the one in last season, especially with the great addition of their summer signings. This former Switzerland’s national team is often in favour of the attacking 4-2-3-1 formation. Unfortunately, his tactical approach seems to be anticipated already by their local contenders. Thus, he needs to come up with the back-up plan to win again and reach the top of the standings. The 4-3-3 seems a possible alternative. Luckily, only Nicole Schultz is ruled out from the squad due to his injury.

Dortmund: Roman Burki; Mats Hummels, Raphael Guerrero, Lukasz Piszczek, Didier Akanji; Julian Weigl, Mahmoud Dahoud, Julian Brandt; Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard.

Bremen’s squad seems to be in crisis as a number of key players have to be sidelined due to the injuries and suspension. The most current is their main scorer Niclas Fullkrug. He will be ruled out along with the captain Niklas Moisander, Ludwig Augustinsson and the Japanese, Yuya Osako. However, Nuri Sahin returns from suspension. Therefore, Florian Kohfeldt might employ 4-5-1 or even 3-5-1-1 in this match.

Werder Bremen: Jiri Pavlevka; Michael Lang, Gebre Selassie, Marco Friedl; Davy Klaessen, Max Eggstein, Nuri Sahin, Leonard Bittencourt, Christian Gros, Milot Rashica;  Josh Sargent.

Match facts:

The host seems to have better record with seven victories in their last eight matches at home. Meanwhile, in their last six head-to-head encounters, Marco Reus and Co and Kohfeldt’s men share the same number of win, draw and lose each.

Lucian Favre’s men are likely to secure a three pointer this time, especially considering the most current injury chaos in Bremen’s squad. Dortmund have all they need to win, including playing at their home turf.
