Bayer Leverkusen vs FC Cologne: Leverkusen aims the Champions League
Bayer Leverkusen vs FC Cologne: Match preview
Bayer Leverkusen will strive to maintain their position in the top four teams in the Bundesliga. In that process they will have to defeat Cologne.
Leverkusen’s goal will be to come back after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Schalke, while Cologne suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Union Berlin in the last game.
Both teams have different goals, but still we expect a really interesting match.
Bayer Leverkusen team news:
Leverkusen was sure that they will collect all three points in a game against Schalke, but the match ended 1-1. Schalke was the victim of his own fall in that match, as Juan Miranda equalized the score with an own goal. That point was enough for Leverkusen to overtake M’gladbach in fourth and last place that leads to Champions League.
Leverkusen now has 57 points – one more than M’gladbach after their defeat against Bayern. Leverkusen fans will be optimistic ahead of this match as their team must win to stay in the top four teams in the Bundesliga. They need to prevail in the last three rounds of the season.
Leverkusen is also in the DFB Cup final, where they will play against Bayern after they easily advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-0 victory against Saarbrucken. But for now, their main goal will be to avoid a third consecutive defeat at home in the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen will be without Lucas Alario, after the striker scored his fifth card against Schalke, meaning Kevin Volland could lead attacking line. Jonathan Tah is also committed to returning to the defense, but Karim Bellarabi and Lars Bender remain off the field. Leon Baily missed the game over the weekend due to the birth of a son, although the 22-year-old is expected to return to the match on Wednesday.
Expected lineup: Hradecky, Weiser, Tapsoba, S. Bender, Wendell, Demirbay, Aranguiz, Amiri, Havertz, Diaby, Alario.
FC Cologne team news:
Cologne suffered its third defeat in four games after losing to Union Berlin 2-1 at home this weekend. Markus Gisdola’s team is now in 12th place without a win since the league resumed.
Still, Cologne’s good performances earlier this season should be enough to secure their Bundesliga status for another season. Cologne has seven points more than the teams that are in the relegation zone, so they are pretty sure about that. However, they have to be careful, because Augsburg and Union Berlin achieved victories over the weekend. Now they are above both teams only with a better goal difference.
Noah Katterbach and Simon Terodde are not yet available for Cologne, but winger Ismail Jakobs could return after missing the match for the weekend. Gisdol will have to be careful with the discipline of their team against Leverkusen, where Jonas Hector, Florian Kainz, Mark Uth and Ellyes Skhiri are one card away from suspension.
Expected lineup: Horn; Ehizibue, Bornauw, Czichos, Schmitz, Hector, Skhiri, Drexler, Uth, Kordoba, Cordoba.
Leverkusen has a an obvious goal. That is why they need to achieve a victory. Taking into consideration that Cologne is not under pressure we believe a lot of goals will be scored.
So, according to our opinion, Leverkusen will win and at least three goals will be scored.
